The PipeMic XL and XXL are purpose-built in-pipe leak detection tools for pressurised water mains. Unlike traditional surface-based methods, these systems place an acoustic sensor directly inside the live pipe, allowing operators to detect leak noise at source. The innovative sensor tip houses an integrated acoustic sensor capable of identifying leak noise within the pipe. Once a leak is detected, the line of the pipe can be traced using standard CAT and Genny equipment. The exact position of the sensor tip can then be pinpointed, enabling accurate surface marking above the leak.
Both models use a robust 9mm semi-rigid fibreglass rod designed for long-distance insertion in live water pipes:
- PipeMic XL – 150 metres x 9mm rod
- PipeMic XXL – 300 metres x 9mm rod
The systems operate in pressures from 1 bar up to 10 bar and are suitable for location depths up to 3.5 metres (dependent on tracing equipment and ground conditions). Each unit includes an inbuilt acoustic sensor, integrated sonde and mechanical length counter. Audio feedback is transmitted via Bluetooth to either headphones or an external speaker. A light bar on the unit provides visual indication of acoustic noise levels.
Powered by a standard 9V battery providing up to 12 hours of operational use, the PipeMic XL and XXL are designed for practical deployment across live water distribution networks. The systems can be inserted through multiple access points, including service pipe connections, valves, PE top tees, saddles and hydrants, using appropriate fittings and pressure-balanced systems. Although not WRAS compliant, both models meet the requirements of the Drinking Water Inspectorate Small Surface Area Products regulation 31 (4) (b), with full assessment documentation available upon request. Together, these features make them a reliable solution for long-distance in-pipe acoustic leak detection on pressurised mains.
